The geek in me
Some time ago Christian from Spielstil.net drew my attention to the #BG2GETHER campaign and asked if I would like to participate. At #BG2GETHER different bloggers, podcasters, vloggers etc. create a post about a topic from the world of board games once a month and link each other. To me, this is a great way for all participants to benefit through networking. The reader gets diverse access to a particular topic. After going in search of the starting player last month, this month we are looking for the geek in us ...
How "geeky" are you?
Interesting question. When I'm not fighting battles on the gaming table, I'm a programmer in real life. A lot of people would say: 100% geek, but the times when you had to look for a programmer between pizza boxes and empty coke cans are over. For a real geek I am much too bad in math and to make the connection to board games: I am not an optimizer. I find it admirable that there are players who try to squeeze the last points out of a game. But I like stories - especially in board games - so maybe that's a bit geeky.
How many of the games from Boardgamegeek's Top 100 list have you played?
Out of the top 100 as of 07/08/2022, I have played 35 titles. 12 more titles are pre-ordered or sitting on the shelf waiting to be played. Some time ago I took a closer look at the BGG 100 and made a list of games I really want to test - especially older games like El Grande. I think the list gives a good overview of which connoisseur and expert games are worthwhile - but the time of the geeks is over, because let's be honest: gaming has fully arrived in the mainstream.
Which three did you like best?
I can only give a snapshot here. I was particularly surprised by On the Trail of Marco Polo. It's a really accessible and fast game that always plays differently because of the different characters. I also like the dice as workers :-).
In second and third place for me then at the moment are Aeon's End and Viticulture. This will probably change quickly when we finally start with Gloomhaven - The Paws of the Lion in our round. Suggestions for dates are welcome!
Which ranking can you not understand at all?
Clearly The Crew. I can understand why the game is in this list in different versions, but it doesn't feel fitting. I mean, The Crew and Gloomhaven or corresponding to the theme On Mars? You just can't compare the two.
What previously unplayed title are you dying to bring to the table?
One game that I probably won't bring to the table due to availability is Mechs vs. Minions. The theme and mechanism are really exciting though. So if you know anyone out there in the bubble who has a heart with a programmer and board gamer please give them my address. Mechs vs Minions is something I'd really like to try out.
